Stiftung Datenschutz was founded by the German Federal Government in 2013. The task of the independent institution is to promote data protection. To this end, on the one hand, it provides information on understanding and implementing data protection law. On the other hand, Stiftung Datenschutz provides a platform for discussion on data policy issues. The organisation sees itself as a link between practice and regulation and sees itself as an interface between politics, supervisory authorities, business, science and society. Stiftung Datenschutz is non-profit and neutral; it acts free of commercial or supervisory interests. It aims to promote solutions that combine effective protection of fundamental rights with sufficient scope for technological progress and new business models. It should not be "innovation or data protection", but "innovation and data protection".
