Art. 5 I c GDPR contais the principle of data minimisation:

"Personal data shall be adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary in relation to the purposes for which they are processed."

The principle of data minimisation is not to be confused with Datenvermeidung (= data avoidance) and Datensparsamkeit (= data parsimony), which elevate the non-processing of personal data to an end in itself [Tile PC.10].
